Aim 54 Phoenix

The AIM-54 Phoenix Missile: A History of the Navy's Long-Range Air-to-Air Missile

Development and Testing

The AIM-54 Phoenix was developed by Hughes Aircraft Company in the early 1960s. It was designed to be a long-range interceptor missile, capable of engaging enemy aircraft at distances of up to 100 miles. The missile was first tested in 1966, and it was deployed with the U.S. Navy in 1974.

Deployment and Use

The AIM-54 Phoenix was used by the U.S. Navy for over 30 years. It was the primary air-to-air missile carried by the F-14 Tomcat fighter jet. The Phoenix was used in combat in several conflicts, including the Gulf War and the Bosnian War. It was retired from service in 2006.
