Yamal makes history as Spain see off Italy

Spain's Lamine Yamal became the youngest goalscorer in men's European Championship history as Spain edged Italy in their Euro 2024 quarter-final on penalties.

The 17-year-old forward fired Spain ahead in the 16th minute, continuing his remarkable rise in international football.

Italy fought back to level through Ciro Immobile in the 60th minute, but Spain held on to win 4-2 in the shootout. Sergio Busquets, Dani Olmo and Alvaro Morata all scored from 12 yards, while Italy's Nicolo Barella and Jorginho missed.

Spain will now face France in the semi-finals on Tuesday, while Italy's Euro 2024 campaign is over.

Yamal's goal was his third in the tournament, making him the joint-top scorer alongside France's Karim Benzema. The Barcelona forward has now scored six goals in his last four appearances for Spain, and he looks set to become a key player for his country in the years to come.

Yamal's historic goal is a reminder of the depth of talent in Spanish football. The country has a long history of producing world-class players, and Yamal is the latest in a long line of stars to emerge from the Spanish youth system.

Spain will be hoping that Yamal can continue his fine form in the semi-finals against France. Les Bleus are the world champions and one of the favourites to win Euro 2024, but Spain will be confident of causing an upset if Yamal can maintain his current form.

Regardless of the outcome of the semi-final, Yamal has already made history. The 17-year-old has announced himself on the international stage and he looks set to become one of the most exciting players in world football in the years to come.
