Alysha Newman Vaults into Third at Diamond League Rome

Canadian Finishes Behind Two Olympic Medalists

Newman Clears 4.60m for Bronze

Canadian pole vaulter Alysha Newman put on a strong performance at the Diamond League meet in Rome, Italy, on Thursday, finishing third in a field that included two Olympic medalists.

Newman cleared 4.60 meters to secure the bronze medal, just behind Olympic champion Katie Nageotte of the United States and Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Anzhelika Sidorova of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC).

Nageotte won the gold with a jump of 4.84m, while Sidorova took the silver with 4.70m. Newman's effort was her second-best performance of the season, following her 4.70m jump at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in June.

  • Newman is now ranked seventh in the world in the women's pole vault.
  • She is the reigning Pan American Games champion and has represented Canada at two Olympic Games.
  • Newman is a strong contender to represent Canada at the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, from July 15-24.

Newman's Performance a Positive Sign Heading into World Championships

Newman's performance in Rome is a positive sign for her heading into the World Championships, where she will be looking to improve on her ninth-place finish in Doha in 2019.

With her consistent performances and strong mental game, Newman is a threat to reach the podium at the World Championships and continues to be a role model for young athletes in Canada and around the world.
